IDOL Gallery are proud to present Luke Chueh's first major exhibition in Tokyo, Japan. "Turning Japanese" features all new works inspired by his (mis)understanding of Japanese culture. Subjects range from Ritual Suicide, Ramen, Kappa, Cosplay, Kawaii Culture, and more. This two artist exhibit also features new works of Tokyo based super designer Touma. Headspace Series (Round 1)

１０月１１日より１０月１４日の間、僕は Shea/Ziegler よりロンドンを拠点にした Moniker Art Fair に参加する招待を受けた。このイベントでは僕は "Headspace Series" の第一シリーズを展覧することに決めた。このシリーズは僕な好きなものやインスピレーションを受けるものをテーマにしたものだ。作品は僕の熊が頭を取り除き、中に熊ではないものを見せつけている。たとえば Star Wars のキャラクターだったり、僕の好きな作家のキャラクターだったり（Banksyの作品へのオマージュ）。このシリーズは数年に渡って５０〜６０枚に渡るものにする予定だ。

On October 11th through October 14th 2012, Shea/Ziegler invited to be a part of the London based Moniker Art Fair. For the fair I chose to show the first round of my "Headspace Series". The series is about the things I love and the things I'm inspired by. The paintings all feature my bear removing his head, only to reveal something else inside. Examples include characters from Star Wars characters to the artwork from artists I love (in this case, Banksy). I envision the series to expand to over 50 - 60 paintings over the next couple years.

I Am Your Plaything

９月７日より９月３０日の間、Rotofugi Gallery で "I Am Your Plaything" という展覧会が開催された。この展覧会は僕のトイ・カルチャーへの愛（そして憎悪）をテーマにしたものだ。Rotofugi はいくつもの賞を受賞しているトイ・専門店／ギャラリーなので、この展覧会を開催するにはうってつけだった。

From September 7th through September 30th 2012, Rotofugi Gallery hosted "I Am Your Plaything" an art show featuring works inspired by my love (and hate) of toy culture. Since Rotofugi is an award winning toy store / gallery, so I thought it was the ideal space to host this show.

"Mission To Nowhere" は Dabs Myla がキュレーションを行い、Thinkspace Gallery で行われたショー、"Marvelous Expedition" の為に制作した。タイトルが示すように、このショーのテーマは旅行と冒険。僕はサルが宇宙服を着て茫然と地図を見つめてる絵がテーマに上手くマッチすると思った。この作品のアイデアは実は Mr.Clement の "Astrolapin" というおもちゃのアートワークからヒントを得ている。Mr.Clement への敬意を示すため、サルの肩には彼のシンボルでもあるウサギが起用されている。

 "Mission To Nowhere" was created for "Marvelous Expedition", a show curated by Dabs Myla and hosted by Thinkspace Gallery. As the title implies, the theme of the show revolves travel and adventure. I thought the the idea of a monkey in a space suit, staring blankly at map would suit the theme nicely. The origin of this idea is actually rooted in the artwork of Mr. Clement with his "Astrolapin" toy. As a nod to Mr. Clement, the mission patch on the monkeys left shoulder features his rabbit.

２０１２年八月、僕は友人であり同志でもある Scott Tolleson より彼の Nosellots をテーマにした、"Nosellots Super Show Shindig"と題されたグループ展への招待を受けた。
Nosellots とは Tolleson がデザインしたぬいぐるみのキャラクターだ。彼がこのキャラクターをアニメーションか子供向けの絵本にする予定だという話を聞いている。このショーでは、彼からこれらのキャラクターをインスピレーションを受けた作品を制作する依頼を受けた。僕は "Lyle Bean" というキャラクターを、まるで自分の世界に存在しているかのように扱うことにした。このキャラクターを "Lukey Bean" と名付けた。"Nosellots Super Show Shindig" はオレゴンはポートランドにある Screaming Sky Gallery で開催されている。

In August, 2012, my friend and colleague Scott Tolleson invited my to contribute a painting to his Nosellots themed group show, "Nosellots Super Show Shindig".  Nosellots are a series of plush characters Tolleson designed. I believe he has plans of eventually turn them into an animation, or a series of children's books.  For the show he asked us to create something inspired by his characters. I choose to recreate "Lyle Bean" as if it existed in my universe. I renamed the character "Lukey Bean".  "Nosellots Super Show Shindig" is hosted by Portland Oregon's Screaming Sky Gallery.

Elementary School Is Hell (Izod, Not Le Tigre)

今年の八月、 Munky King でギャラリーの友人でもある Super Cooper Berella がキュレーションを行った"Memories Are Made Of This"　と題されたショーが開催される。このショーのテーマは「子供の頃の思い出」で、僕はしばらく考えた後、小学生の時に撮ったクラス写真を元にした作品を作ろうと決めた。ある意味、これは1983年から1985年までの僕の自画像だ。ありがちなボール・カットの頭、ありがちなスカイ・ブルーの背景。ただひとつ違うのは、彼が着ているIzod の金色と赤のポロ・シャツ。

This August, Munky King will host "Memories Are Made Of This" a group art show curated by friend of the gallery, Super Cooper Berella. The theme of the show is 'childhood memories', and after giving it some thought, I decided to create a piece inspired by my elementary school class photo. In essence, it's a self portrait of me from 1983-85.  The painting features a bear with a classic bowl haircut, standing in front of a classic sky blue background. But the thing that takes me back is the gold and red Izod polo shirt he's wearing.

８０年代、社会的地位を決めるものはシャツに縫い付けられたロゴだった（これは今もあまり変わっていないみたいだけれども）。この中で一番人気だったのがLe Tigre （何かを飛び越えている虎のロゴ）で、その次は Izod （今の Lacoste。ワニのロゴ）。僕が覚えている限り一番人気が なかったのが Britannia （ユニオン・ジャックをロゴに起用）。 

Back in the 80's class distinction could be determined by the logo you wore on your shirt (and from what I can tell, things haven't changed after all this time). At the top food chain was Le Tigre (which featured a leaping tiger as a logo) next was Izod (now known asLacoste, featured the crocodile), and if I recall, the bottom of the barrel was Britannia (whom used the bottom half of a Union Jack as a logo).

子供の残酷さを考えると、僕は Le Tigre キッズに酷い目に遭わされたので、作品には Izod のロゴをしっかり含めた。  残念ながら、これが Munky King での最後のショーとなる。

Considering the cruelty of children, I caught hell from the Le Tigre kids, and this is why I made sure to include the Izod logo in the painting.  Tragically, this will also be Munky King's last art show at their Melrose location.

今年の夏、LAアーティスト Luke Chueh が画集、"The Art of  Luke Chueh: Bearing the Unbearable"を Titan Books と Gallery 1988 よりリリースした。この画集は Chueh の２００３年より２００９年までの活動を記録したものだ。ミニマムな色彩、シンプルな動物のキャラクター、そして何度も繰り返される最悪の事態を使った Luke Chueh の作品は一気に売り切れ、多大な賞賛を受け、何人ものファンを引き寄せている。この画集は彼のファン達が待ちに待った物だ。（Video by  JDVVC.）
